Once the melon seed has sprouted, the plant develops quickly. A basic rule of thumb is to sow them 3 to 4 weeks before transplanting. Melons are one of the last plants you should pre-germinate on your windowsill in April. However, with a few tips and tricks, it can still be done. It is often this long development time that we find most difficult to replicate in the greenhouse. From seed to mature fruit, the process for melons is long, between 70 and 90 days. It is this warm origin that we need to mimic in our greenhouse when we want to succeed with growing melons. However, the common factor is a significant warmer climate than we know it from our gardens. Yet others believe its origins are to be found on the African continent. Some botanists believe that melons originated in India, while others think it came from Iran. The exact origin of melons as a species is not known for certain. Therefore, a homegrown melon has a more intense taste. Varieties with a thinner and softer skin quickly release all flavour compounds when eaten. The varieties we grow in hobby greenhouses are not nearly as robust, the skin is often thinner, which makes the taste often much better. The taste is therefor not the primary consideration. This is because the fruits must withstand machine handling, transport, and long-term storage. The varieties of melon used for industrial production have two primary characteristics. The taste of the melon fruit is formed from many components, which can be divided into three main elements: the ratio of several types of acids, sugars, and flavours. The fruits are not quite as big as those you buy in the supermarket, but the taste is absolutely fantastic and intense - the taste of "Sun and Summer", if you ask me. Once you have tasted a homegrown melon, you will never forget it. However, I would say that it requires a greenhouse of at least 10 square meters as melon cultivation takes up a lot of space. If you haven't tried it yet, this summer could be a great opportunity. Not hollow, unripe. Most experienced greenhouse owners have probably tried it at some point. ![]() If you have a good ear, tap on the watermelon: if it sounds hollow, it’s ripe. If its stripes are found all around the melon it’s just not ready yet. Watermelons that are allowed to ripen on the vine have the best flavor so if possible protect plants from light frosts.Ĭheck under the melon – if it has a yellow or light colored bottom, it should be ripe. To improve the chances of having nice sweet matured fruit by the end of the season, it can be helpful to limit the number of fruits on each plant (by removing blossoms) after you have 3-4 watermelons forming which will allow the plant put all its energy into those remaining fruits. Water around the base of the plant and be careful to avoid splashing dirt onto the leaves which can transfer diseases from the soil to the plants. After this, water only when soil becomes dry as high rainfall or excessive irrigation as the melons near maturity will adversely affect fruit flavor. Other InformationĪdequate moisture is essential during the growth of the plant and during pollination while fruits are setting. Days to Maturityįrom date directly sown in garden. Seeds germinate in approximately 5-7 days. Rows should be spaced 1.5-1.8 m (5-6′) apart. Plants should be spaced/thinned to 2-3 plants per hill or 15 cm (6″) apart. Sow seeds 2.5 cm (1″) deep and sow 5-6 seeds per hill or 5 cm (2″) apart. Plants will do better if there is some shelter from winds. ![]() ![]() There are only two reasons why I did not give this scope a 5 star rating. Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: new | Sold by: huntingsuperstore At this point, having used it little, I would certainly recommend it to anyone thinking about buying one! Read full review. Of course, as stated, I do not expect to be using the reticle illumination much anyhow.īottom Line: None of my dislikes are show stoppers and for the price this seems like a very descent scope. Though probably not a big deal to most, it bugs me. Because my preference is to always start on the lowest setting, I would prefer that no matter which way you turned the knob from "0" (which is how the color is selected) you would always start at a setting of 1 and increase to a setting of 5. Once turned 180 degrees you once again are at a "0" setting. If however you would turn the knob counter-clockwise (choosing the opposite color), you would be DECREASING the illumination of that color from 5 to 1. Also, when viewing the knob from the shooters side, if it is at the "0" mark, the adjustment levels if the knob was turned clockwise would be INCREASING the illumination of that color (could be red or green) from 1 to 5. I would prefer an easier turning knob with crisp indents at each of the five levels of illumination (5 for each color). For starters, it is somewhat stiff and the indents at the various illumination levels are barely discernible. I do not care for the reticle illumination adjustment knob much. Another inch of eye relief would have been nice, two or three even better. My scope is mounted as far to the rear on my AR as it can be and I am just at the edge of getting a full field of view. What could be improved: The eye relief could be longer. ![]() The ideal height for me would actually be somewhere between no riser and the riser provided. Having the option of using a 10mm mount riser is nice, though having tried mounting the scope both ways it’s hard to imagine anyone could use it without the riser on an AR. It provides for both quick acquisition at closer ranges and descent accuracy at the longer ranges. For me, the 3x magnification is about perfect as my shooting is generally anywhere between 25 and 200 yards. I so far like the Enhanced Battle Reticle, which is the first I have ever seen or used. The reticle is quite easy to see during daylight without illumination. I have not used the reticle illumination much, nor do I expect to, but being able to select either red or green is a nice feature. The optics are nice, clear and easy to focus for different shooters. It can be cut off easily enough as I don’t see a way to simply remove it. It’s nice that the caps won’t get lost, but the wire is a bit stiff and a little in the way. I have mixed feelings about the thin piece of wire used to hold the adjustment caps on. The windage and elevation adjustments are relatively crisp and work well. Zeroing was easy and thus far it seems to be holding zero well. I am using it on an AR, and it was easy to mount and the battery for the reticle illumination was easy to install. What I like: Out of the box the scope is nice looking and seems like it is well built and rugged (heavy). As I write this, understand that I have only had the scope a short time and it has been used a limited amount. ![]() ![]() ![]() However, this was reversed later on, and Cgminer version 3.7.2 is the latest version with GPU support.
